Trump did not rule out the possibility of intervening "in the affairs" of Cuba to help the population. He plans to open the country for the return of Cuban Americans.

US President Donald Trump suggested that American presidents have contemplated intervening in Cuban affairs for decades, but "it looks like I'm going to be the one to do it," UNN reports, citing AP.

"Other presidents have looked at it for 50, 60 years, done things," Trump told reporters in the Oval Office. "And it looks like I'm going to be the one to do it. So I'd be happy to do it."

He added that the US wants to open Cuba "for Cuban Americans so they can go back and help."

Trump did not answer a question about the aircraft carrier USS Nimitz reportedly entering the southern Caribbean Sea on Wednesday. He also did not specify exactly what he meant.

However, the president's comments differed from those on Wednesday when he was asked about a possible US escalation in Cuba and hinted that there would be none.

He called Cuba a failed country and said: "They have no electricity. They have no money. They have nothing, really," before adding: "We're going to help them."
