Today, on August 5, everyone can join the event dedicated to the device that regulates traffic in the vast majority of cities on our planet - the International Traffic Light Day, UNN writes.
It was on August 5, 1914, that a traffic control device appeared on one of the streets of the American city of Cleveland, where red and green lights switched, and a beep sounded at the moment of switching.
Although the first attempts to regulate street traffic were made in England in 1868 with the help of John Knight's traffic light, which was more like a semaphore and consisted of two manually switched arrows. At night, the arrows were replaced by gas lanterns of two colors. Once, one of the lanterns exploded and injured a police officer. After that, Knight's device was abandoned.
In 1920, traffic lights with three signals began to appear on the streets of New York and Detroit: yellow was added to red and green.
The first traffic lights in Ukraine were installed in Kharkiv in 1936.
