Eight people hung at the top of a high roller coaster for over three hours before firefighters rescued them one by one at an amusement park in the state of Texas, USA, officials said, UNN reports citing Fox News.

According to Galveston police, authorities arrived at the scene at Pleasure Pier in Galveston around 5:35 p.m. local time on Thursday, where the Iron Shark roller coaster had malfunctioned.

According to officials, eight people were on the ride when it came to a halt.

The Galveston Fire Department used a ladder truck to extract the stranded passengers one by one using safety harnesses, a process that took about three and a half hours.

The malfunction was shown live by local television stations, depicting passengers stuck near the top of the ride's 30-meter vertical lift.

Officials have not disclosed what caused the ride to malfunction.
