After a vessel sank off the coast of Odesa, the region introduced monitoring of the Black Sea waters to assess the possible impact of the incident on the environment and navigation safety. This was reported by the head of the Odesa Regional Military Administration, Oleh Kiper, as reported by UNN.
Context
On July 19, a foreign merchant vessel carrying a cargo of corn suffered a cynical Russian attack while leaving a port in Odesa region. As a result of the enemy strike, the dry cargo ship sustained significant damage, lost its seaworthiness, and sank on July 26 approximately 5 nautical miles off the coast of Odesa. Unfortunately, 10 people died as a result of the attack.
In this regard, an emergency meeting of the commission on technogenic and environmental safety and emergency situations was held at the Odesa Regional State (Military) Administration. Currently, constant monitoring of the Black Sea waters has been introduced to assess the possible impact of the incident on the environment and navigation safety. Special attention is paid to controlling the possible leakage of fuel and lubricants into the natural environment
According to him, territorial communities along the Black Sea coast have been instructed to carry out constant monitoring of the state of the waters. The available resources for prompt response in the event of even minor signs of pollution have also been clarified. All necessary forces and means will be immediately involved for their localization and elimination.
The Odesa Regional State (Military) Administration, the Administration of Seaports of Ukraine, and the State Emergency Service of Ukraine continue to coordinate the work of all responsible services. The situation is under constant control
