Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum expressed her solidarity with the victims of the shooting at one of the country's most important tourist sites – the ancient pyramid complex of Teotihuacan.

There are seven weeks left until the first World Cup match in Mexico City.

"There was a big crush and panic, everyone was running at the same time to get out," a British couple told the BBC, describing chaotic scenes amid the sounds of gunfire.

The pre-Hispanic pyramids and ruins in Teotihuacan are a UNESCO World Heritage site and one of the country's most popular tourist attractions.

Police found firearms, cold weapons, and live ammunition at the scene. Sheinbaum said she was following updates and was in contact with the Canadian embassy.

She wrote on social media that she had instructed her security cabinet to investigate the incident and provide all necessary support.

"What happened today in Teotihuacan deeply pains us. I express my sincerest solidarity with the victims and their families," she wrote in Spanish.

Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand confirmed that one Canadian died and another was injured in the incident. She said that Canadian consular officials were providing assistance.

Minister of Public Security Cristobal Castañeda Camarillo told reporters on Monday that among the injured were two Colombians, a Russian, and a Canadian.

The identity of the shooter has not yet been released, and officials have not disclosed the motive for the shooting.

Teotihuacan is an ancient city with massive pyramids that predates the Aztecs.

Earlier this month, the government of Mexico State announced that an immersive night show for tourists would take place here during the World Cup this summer.

Earlier this year, the Mexican government was forced to assure people that security during the tournament would not be an issue after gunmen from the Jalisco New Generation Cartel terrorized numerous cities amid burning barricades and gun violence following the killing of the group's leader Nemesio Oseguera, known as "El Mencho."

Although this latest incident does not appear to be related to drug-related violence: the victim was a Canadian tourist shot by a man who opened fire from the iconic Pyramid of the Moon.

"The shooter then apparently committed suicide," the publication writes.
