Former Polish Justice Minister Zbigniew Ziobro, who is evading justice, is reportedly in the US on a visa granted by President Donald Trump after fleeing Hungary. This was reported by Politico, according to UNN.
Details
The politician had been in Hungary since 2025 after former Prime Minister Viktor Orbán granted him asylum. However, the new Hungarian leader, Péter Magyar, vowed to initiate extradition proceedings against Ziobro upon taking office.
Poland is seeking Ziobro over the alleged misappropriation of public funds and the use of the Pegasus spyware system against political opponents. He denies the allegations, calling the investigation political revenge by Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk.
Poland's Ministry of Foreign Affairs told local media on Sunday that it has no official information regarding Ziobro's whereabouts, adding that his passport has been revoked.
Background
The Pegasus case is a high-profile political scandal in Poland involving the potential illegal use of spyware during the rule of the Law and Justice (PiS) party. The current government is investigating whether the software was used to monitor political opponents, while the party denies these allegations.
According to the European Parliament, the previous Polish government spent approximately 25 million PLN to acquire the Pegasus system, which may have been used to wiretap the mobile phones of at least ten politicians and businessmen.
Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk stated that he has evidence of the spyware's use, noting that the number of individuals who may have been targets of surveillance is significant.
In January 2024, the Polish Sejm established an investigative commission to look into the potential surveillance of opposition politicians using Pegasus during the Law and Justice administration. The commission is examining the legality and justification of the system's use by the government, intelligence services, and police between November 16, 2015, and November 20, 2023.
In late September 2025, Ziobro, one of the figures in the case, was detained at Warsaw airport.
