€90 billion to Ukraine and new sanctions against Russia provisionally approved, procedure to be completed on Thursday - EU presidency

EU ambassadors have provisionally agreed on a loan to Ukraine and the 20th package of sanctions against Russia. Final approval is expected on Thursday after the procedures are completed.

The Cypriot presidency of the European Union has confirmed that EU ambassadors have given preliminary approval for a €90 billion loan to Ukraine; the formal procedure will be completed on Thursday, The Guardian reports, according to UNN.

The Cypriot presidency also indicated that the 20th package of sanctions against Russia has also received preliminary approval.

They will now undergo a written procedure for their final approval by the EU Council

– said the spokesperson for the Cypriot presidency of the EU.

The written procedure is expected to be completed tomorrow afternoon, which conveniently is also when EU leaders are scheduled to meet in Cyprus, the publication writes.

"Just a small clarification: the written procedure ends tomorrow at 13:00 CET, after which this document will be approved. But this is conditional on Hungary and Slovakia receiving Russian oil via 'Druzhba', as expected later today, amidst oil already being transported," Rikard Jozwiak, Radio Free Europe's editor for Europe, reported on X on Wednesday.
