Demand for $110,000 for a court plea deal: Lawyer and SBU officers in Poltava region served with notices of suspicion

NABU and SAP have exposed SBU officials in the Poltava region for a $110,000 bribe. The money was demanded for a plea deal in a case involving trade with the Russian Federation through shell companies.

The National Anti-Corruption Bureau of Ukraine and the Specialized Anti-Corruption Prosecutor's Office announced on April 28 that they have served a notice of suspicion to the head of the investigative department of the SBU Office in the Poltava region, as well as his subordinate and a lawyer. This was reported by UNN with reference to the SAPO.

Details

As the investigation established, the SBU employees, through the mediation of a lawyer, demanded 110,000 US dollars from a business owner. In exchange, they promised to enter into a plea agreement with the company's director—the latter is the subject of criminal proceedings regarding the supply of equipment to Russia through shell companies in Kazakhstan.

This crime is provided for by Part 4 of Art. 111-1 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine (Collaborative activity, transfer of material resources to the armed or paramilitary formations of the aggressor state). The sanction of the article provides for imprisonment from three to five years, with deprivation of the right to hold certain positions or engage in certain activities for ten to fifteen years and with confiscation of property.

The suspects promised to terminate the criminal prosecution, as well as not to apply to the court with a motion for detention and seizure of his company's property

As reported by the SAPO, the suspects were detained on April 27, 2026. This occurred immediately after receiving the second part of the unlawful benefit—55,000 US dollars.

The actions of the detainees are qualified under the following articles of the Criminal Code of Ukraine:

  • The lawyer - Part 5 of Art. 27 (Types of accomplices in a crime) and Part 4 of Art. 368 (Acceptance of an offer, promise, or receipt of an unlawful benefit by an official);
    • The SBU employees - Part 4 of Art. 368 (Acceptance of an offer, promise, or receipt of an unlawful benefit by an official).

      The detainees may face imprisonment from eight to twelve years with deprivation of the right to hold certain positions or engage in certain activities for up to three years, with confiscation of property.
