Foreign Minister Penny Wong suggested that Australia should recognize a Palestinian state as part of peace efforts in the region.

This was reported by UNN with reference to BBC.

Details

Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong said that her country may recognize Palestinian statehood to speed up the movement toward peace in the region. At the same time, the Australian diplomacy noted that Hamas should not play any role in the governance of Palestine.

In his speech on Tuesday night, Wong said that a two-state solution, with Israelis and Palestinians living side by side in separate countries, is "the only hope to break the endless cycle of violence.

For reference

The authorities in Canberra have long stated that the recognition of a Palestinian state can only take place as part of negotiations with Israel on a two-state solution. However, Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong's comments echoed British Foreign Secretary David Cameron's speech earlier this year, when Cameron suggested that the UK could also recognize Palestinian statehood without Israeli support.

Recall

Central Intelligence Agency Director William Burns, who is participating in the talks in Cairo, presented a new proposal that would help advance an agreement between Israel and Hamas to end the war in Gaza and release hostages.
