After the collapse of the coalition, leading German politicians call for new elections early next year

The CDU and the CSU are calling for new elections as soon as possible, as Germany will have a federal government for several months that is not affiliated with the majority in the Bundestag. To hold elections, the Bundestag must be dissolved, but this is possible only after a vote of no confidence.

After the collapse of the “Svitlofor” coalition, the leader of the CDU/CSU parliamentary faction Merz calls for new elections to the Bundestag as soon as possible. He called on Chancellor Olaf Scholz to ask the Bundestag for a vote of confidence next week at the latest, so that new elections can be called.

First, a vote of no confidence is passed. Within 21 days after the vote of no confidence, a decision (agreed upon by the Chancellor and the President of Germany) to dissolve the Bundestag in order to hold early elections is possible. Early elections are held no later than 60 days after the dissolution of the government. Accordingly, they may be held by April 6, 2025.

The leader of the CDU/CSU parliamentary faction, Friedrich Merz, suggests the second half of January as the date, noting that the vote of confidence in parliament should be held within two weeks.

According to Merz, the Union is ready to pass urgent legislative projects before the Bundestag is dissolved. In the few weeks before Christmas, Chancellor Scholz intends to put to a vote in the Bundestag all the bills that need to be passed quickly, such as emergency support for industry and measures to stabilize pensions.

Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier also commented on the situation: he said that Chancellor Scholz asked him yesterday to dismiss Lindner from the post of Finance Minister.

The German president also warned that he was ready to decide to dissolve the Bundestag.

Steinmeier told the parties that now was not the time for “tactics and skirmishes.” The constitution provided for such a situation. “This is the end of the coalition, not the end of the world,” the federal president said. He expects all those in charge to recognize the scale of the problem.

Here is what other politicians think about the “shutdown” of the Traffic Light Coalition.

CDU MP Julia Kleckner (who is the spokesperson for economic policy of the CDU/CSU parliamentary faction in the Bundestag) calls for immediate elections. Kleckner said that the coalition government's performance is shocking. The country is in the midst of a historic economic crisis. The population is dissatisfied, which is also reflected in the growing support for the AfD.

Manuel Höferlin, a FDP member of parliament from Worms, calls the breakup “the right step.

The main FDP candidate in the upcoming Bundestag elections in Mainz, David Dietz, is calling for an immediate vote of confidence in the Bundestag. The “power struggle in Berlin” must stop, Mr. Dietz said. New elections should be held immediately.

UNN reported that German Chancellor Scholz initiates a confidence vote in the Bundestag on January 15, 2024. The decision was made after a conflict with Finance Minister Lindner over budget policy.
