Millions of people in the United Kingdom and Europe watched one of the rarest solar eclipses of recent decades, which was the largest for Britain since 1999. The BBC reports, UNN writes.

Details

In the United Kingdom, the eclipse was partial: the Moon covered more than 90% of the Sun, while in Cornwall this figure reached 95%. The phenomenon peaked on the evening of August 12.

Residents of certain areas of Spain, as well as Greenland and Iceland, could see the total eclipse.

At approximately 8:30 p.m. local time in Spain, the Sun, Moon, and Earth aligned, causing the daytime sky to be plunged into darkness for a short time.

The total eclipse lasted less than two minutes

Large crowds gathered in cities and at popular viewing platforms across Europe. People watched the phenomenon through special glasses, while in areas experiencing totality they could see the solar corona and prominences.

Everyone applauded and shared their amazement at what they had seen. There are no words to describe these feelings. The universe is amazing

— said Chilean scientist Yasmin Katriceo, who came to Spain for the eclipse.

A total solar eclipse occurs approximately once every 18 months at different points on Earth, but in any one specific location, such a phenomenon occurs on average only once every 400 years.

For the United Kingdom, the next total solar eclipse is not expected until 2090. Before then, the country will be able to observe a partial eclipse in 2027, when the Moon will cover approximately 45% of the Sun in some regions.
