President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy has signed a decree appointing an ombudsman for the protection of the rights of servicemen. In the near future, a draft law on the military ombudsman and the systemic framework for his activities will be developed. He announced this in an evening address, UNN reports.
There was a request from our military - and this is an objective need - to create a special institution of a military ombudsman. We need a person who can protect the rights of our soldiers, and we need a systemic capacity so that the ombudsman, together with the Ministry of Defense and all the others who are needed, can really influence the situation and really help soldiers and the families of our soldiers. We discussed the creation of such an institution with the Minister of Defense of Ukraine, with the military command, and with representatives of civil society - there were many views,
Zelenskyy also noted that the first decision has now been prepared - a decree on the appointment of the Presidential Commissioner for the Protection of the Rights of Servicemen and Family Members of Our Soldiers. To start this work and prepare the launch of the ombudsman institution. As Zelensky emphasized, he chose a strong candidate. The President also emphasized that the Decree will be published tomorrow.
Together with the new ombudsman, the human rights community and the Ministry of Defense, we will agree on the relevant draft law on the military ombudsman, as well as the relevant systemic framework for its activities: powers, finances and everything else.
