On August 16, reporters from The Washington Post visited a Ukrainian prison in the northeast of the country. According to officials, more than 300 Russian prisoners of war are being held there.
A prison official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said that 320 Russians have passed through the prison in the past 10 days, heading for other camps in Ukraine. According to the official, the vast majority of them are young conscripts, and only about 20 percent are contract soldiers or mobilized soldiers. This means that about 250 conscripts were imprisoned in Ukraine.

The vast majority of captives were not wounded. Several wounded soldiers interviewed by The Post described how they were wounded in combat before being captured, including one who said he wounded himself with his own grenade, hoping he would die and not be captured. According to him, Ukrainian soldiers gave him first aid and then evacuated him to a clinic, where he underwent an X-ray and surgery to remove shrapnel from his wound.
The soldiers said they were well treated and provided with medical care. Their bandages looked clean and they said they were fed three meals a day, including soup, salad and porridge. According to the men, they were allowed to shower and were not mistreated.
