British officials have warned Ireland that its liberal visa policy has turned the country into a loophole for Russian spies to enter the Kingdom. This was reported to The Telegraph by Barry Andrews, a former Minister for Children in the Irish government and current Member of the European Parliament for Dublin, UNN reports.
Details
According to him, this occurred due to Ireland's overly liberal visa program. Since Moscow's full-scale invasion of Ukraine, Ireland has issued 14,000 visas to Russians, with an approval rate of 90 percent.
Ireland does not have the most advanced intelligence services compared to the UK. The UK is concerned that Ireland is a "back door." Therefore, people come to Ireland, and here there are actually no surveillance capabilities like those in the UK
He expressed concern over "whether we are conducting sufficient vetting of these applications, whether the grants are reliable, and whether we have grounds for concern regarding Russia's malicious activity in Ireland."
Unfortunately, there is quite a lot of evidence of Russia's malicious activity in Ireland
For Reference
Ireland is one of two EU member states not in the Schengen Area that has its own visa process. Instead, it is a member of the Common Travel Area along with the United Kingdom, the Channel Islands, and the Isle of Man.
The Schengen visa zone introduced restrictions for Russians arriving after the Russian invasion of Ukraine, and officials are considering a ban on entry for anyone who participated in the war.
Following the invasion of Ukraine in 2022, four high-ranking Russian diplomats were expelled from the country because their activities were "not in accordance with international standards of diplomatic behavior."
As a reminder
Irish Justice Minister Helen McEntee warned that granting Ukraine "associate membership" in the European Union could block the country's actual accession and leave Kyiv in an uncertain position regarding its aspirations to join the EU as a full member.
