According to the Japan Meteorological Agency, the first earthquake occurred at 1:20 p.m. local time in Omachi, with a magnitude higher than 5 on the Japanese seven-point seismic intensity scale.
At 2:54 p.m. local time, another earthquake with a magnitude lower than 5 occurred in Omachi and surrounding areas.
The Japan Meteorological Agency warned of aftershocks of similar strength over the next week. At the same time, no tsunami warning was issued.
No reports of casualties in this prefecture have been received.
