The fund was planned to be established as part of a settlement of Trump's lawsuit against the U.S. Internal Revenue Service over the leak of his tax information in 2019. It was intended that the funds could be received by people claiming politically motivated persecution by government agencies.
The initiative became the subject of several lawsuits, including from police officers who responded to the storming of the Capitol on January 6, 2021. Last week, a federal judge in Virginia temporarily barred the administration from taking any actions regarding the management of the fund until the review is completed.
