Trump reportedly extended an invitation to Xi Jinping in early November, shortly after the election, but it is not known whether Xi accepted. Trump's team is also considering inviting other high-ranking officials, including Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban, who has friendly relations with the newly elected president.
The publication notes that ambassadors and other diplomats are usually invited to inaugurations, but State Department records dating back to 1874 show that foreign leaders have never attended the transfer of power.
