Sumy RMA told about the evacuation from the border zone

In Sumy region, the evacuation of the population from settlements within a 5-kilometer zone from the state border of Ukraine with Russia has been going on since August 2023. Since then, about 6,000 people have been evacuated. This was reported by the Sumy Regional Military Administration in response to a request from UNN.

The situation in the border areas in Sumy region has recently deteriorated sharply . The enemy has been regularly conducting strikes and mortar attacks, but in recent weeks they have become much more intense. In addition, enemy subversive reconnaissance groups are trying to infiltrate the territory of Ukraine through Sumy region.

According to the RMA, as of March 19 this year, all residents of the 5-kilometer zone were notified of the need to evacuate. The RMA also said that when the evacuation plan was approved last year, it was about the population of 4 districts: Konotop, Okhtyrka, Sumy, and Shostka districts (15 territorial communities or 115 settlements in total). The total number of residents of these districts who were subject to evacuation is more than 16,400 people, including 1,411 children. As of March 19, the number of people who refused to be evacuated amounted to 6,149, including 345 children.

"Representatives of local authorities continue to conduct explanatory work with the local population. Even those citizens who refused to evacuate may change their minds," Volodymyr Artyukh, head of the regional state administration and head of the regional military administration, added in a response to UNN.

The response of the Sumy RMA, dated March 31, states that "since the beginning of the evacuation measures, the total number of evacuated people is 5804, including 924 children." Most people were evacuated from Sumy district - more than 2,894 people, including 384 children.

They were also evacuated:

  • Shostka district - 2023 people (including 464 children); 
  • Okhtyrka district - 601 people (including 52 children); 
  • Konotop district - 286 people (including 24 children).

The RMA also reported on the situation with the evacuation of residents of Velyka Pysarivka and the settlements that are part of the community.

"Due to the aggravation of the operational situation on the territory of the Velyka Pysarivka territorial community of the Okhtyrka district of Sumy region, related to the constant shelling of the border areas, the Sumy regional state administration - regional military administration organized the evacuation of the population who expressed a desire to evacuate from the village of Velyka Pysarivka.

Between 13 and 25 March 2024, 339 people, including 36 children, were reportedly evacuated from Velyka Pysarivka in an organized manner: 319 people, including 29 children, by evacuation buses; 7 people, including 3 children, with the assistance of the Armed Forces of Ukraine; 6 people, including 4 children, with the assistance of the Main Department of the National Police in Sumy region; and 7 people, including 7 volunteers. In addition, 3167 people, including 470 children, left on their own.

The evacuated population is accommodated on the territory of Okhtyrka city, Hrunka village and Chupakhivska settlement territorial communities in premises prepared for this case, most of the population has settled with relatives and friends," said Volodymyr Artyukh, head of Sumy RMA.

Measures are currently underway to increase the number of equipped places to accommodate people, if necessary.
