With the beginning of summer, passenger traffic at the Ukrainian border has traditionally increased. While in the spring, an average of about 85,000 people crossed the border daily, in June this figure consistently exceeds 100,000. On weekends, the number of crossings reached 115,000 per day. Andriy Demchenko, the spokesperson for the State Border Guard Service of Ukraine, reported this in a comment to UNN.
The SBGS advises not to rely on Telegram channels
According to Demchenko, citizens should check information about the workload of checkpoints through official sources rather than relying on messages in social networks or Telegram channels.
Instead of watching various Telegram channels that spread information about situational queues, I would advise people to familiarize themselves with the status of the workload at checkpoints. Then they will see the real picture – where and at what hour the directions are most congested, and where the situation is calmer. Such information can be found on the page of the Western Regional Directorate of the State Border Guard Service. It is updated every three hours and allows people to plan their trip more effectively,
Since the beginning of summer, passenger traffic has increased by more than 15%
The SBGS notes that the increase in the number of trips at the beginning of summer is a traditional phenomenon. This is influenced by the end of the school year, the vacation season, and the intensification of citizens' trips abroad.
The beginning of summer is traditionally accompanied by an increase in passenger traffic. We observed this both this year and in previous years. While on weekdays during the spring months, the average border crossing rate was about 85,000 people per day in both directions, since June 1, passenger traffic has begun to grow actively. The first days of summer showed about 95,000 crossings per day, and now this figure consistently exceeds 100,000,
According to him, a particularly noticeable load was recorded on weekends.
During the weekends that just passed, up to 115,000 citizens crossed the border per day. At the same time, throughout June, there has been a prevalence of departures from Ukraine. People are going on vacation, settling personal matters, or visiting relatives abroad. We expect that passenger traffic will continue to grow in the future. During peak periods, it can reach even 150,000 border crossings per day,
Half of all trips are on the Polish direction
According to Demchenko, the highest load is traditionally recorded on the border with Poland. This direction remains the most popular among citizens leaving Ukraine.
If we talk about the distribution of passenger traffic, about 50% of all border crossings occur specifically on the border with Poland. This is the most popular direction for both passenger cars and bus services. That is why the largest queues are most often observed on the Polish section of the border, especially on weekends and during periods of increased demand for trips abroad,
When is the best time to cross the border
The border service emphasizes that the waiting time at the border largely depends on the day of the week and the time of day.
It cannot be said that there are queues in a certain direction around the clock. In the morning hours, individual checkpoints can be almost empty. At the same time, other directions may have queues of several dozen cars. That is why it is important to track up-to-date information and choose less congested routes,
He added that the greatest load is currently on departures from Ukraine.
Now we see an increased demand for traveling abroad. This is exactly what leads to the formation of queues. If people plan a trip by their own car, they should check the situation at a specific checkpoint in advance and take into account the characteristics of certain days and directions,
Buses operate through an electronic queue
Separately, the SBGS spokesperson reminded that an electronic queue system is in effect for bus transportation.
An electronic queue works for buses. Border guards do not influence the schedules of regular or irregular trips. The system determines the specific time of the bus's arrival at the checkpoint. In most directions, a slotting mechanism is already in place, and where it does not yet exist, registration in the electronic queue still remains mandatory,
Regarding rail connections, according to Demchenko, everything depends on the train schedule and the security situation.
Rail connections may be adjusted due to security factors, in particular due to air raid alerts or shelling. At the same time, the border processing itself for trains, as well as for buses and passenger cars, is carried out as promptly as possible,
