Details

According to court spokesperson Lee Sang-jin, the hearing began on Monday, December 16.

After the impeachment ruling was passed, Yoon was removed from power and is awaiting a court decision on whether he will be removed or reinstated, which could take up to 180 days from the date of the impeachment ruling. In previous cases, the process usually took 2-3 months.

The court is supposed to consist of nine members, but currently only six judges are working there. The opposition demands that the remaining candidates be approved in December. The decision on their appointment will be made by the acting president.

The speaker of the National Assembly assured that the parliament would work quickly to appoint new judges, two of whom were nominated by the opposition and one by the ruling party.

Recall

Earlier, South Korean President Yun Seok-yol announced the introduction of martial law in the country: to “destroy pro-North Korean forces and maintain constitutional order.” Clashes broke out in Seoul between citizens and the military, who blocked the parliament building. The leader of the opposition Democratic Party, Lee Jae-man, emphasized that martial law is unconstitutional and contrary to the interests of society.

Opposition parties in South Korea initiated the impeachment of President Yun Seok-yeol due to the introduction of martial law.

South Korean President Yun Suk-yol has survived an impeachment attempt . However, the future of his presidency remains uncertain due to the crisis caused by the short-lived martial law decree.
