Arkady Dvorkovich, former deputy prime minister of Russia, suspended his duties as FIDE president after EU sanctions. His duties will be temporarily performed by Vice President Viswanathan Anand.

Arkady Dvorkovich, former Deputy Prime Minister of Russia and President of the International Chess Federation (FIDE), suspended his duties on Thursday evening after the European Union imposed sanctions on him. Politico reports, writes UNN.

In its latest sanctions package, the EU accused Dvorkovich of "supporting actions or policies that undermine or threaten the territorial integrity, sovereignty, and independence of Ukraine." The head of FIDE rejected these accusations, stating that he "unequivocally" considers this decision "illegal and unjust."

"I am confident that justice will prevail," he added.

Dvorkovich became president of FIDE in 2018, which drew criticism due to his closeness to the regime of Vladimir Putin. The President of Russia appointed him Deputy Prime Minister in 2012, and he held this position until 2018.

Dvorkovich stated that his decision will remain in effect as long as he is under sanctions from the EU and Switzerland. His duties will be temporarily performed by FIDE Vice President, former world champion Viswanathan Anand.

In 2022, Anand told AFP in an interview that Dvorkovich "clearly demonstrated his independence from Kremlin influence."

Under Dvorkovich's leadership, the FIDE Ethics and Disciplinary Commission largely overturned a 2024 decision that temporarily suspended the Russian Chess Federation and issued a reprimand to Dvorkovich himself for "improper connections" with an organization or person whose activities contradict the goals or interests of FIDE. Subsequently, the reprimand against Dvorkovich was canceled.
