Nebenzya justified Iran's restrictions on shipping at the UN and compared the West to pirates. He also condemned strikes on Russian tankers at sea.

Russia's Ambassador to the UN, Vasily Nebenzya, sharply criticized Western countries during a Security Council meeting while defending Iran's actions in the Strait of Hormuz. This was reported by CNN, according to UNN.

Details

According to him, the accusations against Tehran are groundless, and Iran has the right to restrict navigation in its territorial waters under wartime conditions.

"There was an attempt to place full responsibility on Iran, as if it were Iran that attacked its neighbors, and Iran is deliberately obstructing navigation through the Strait of Hormuz,"

Nebenzya stated.

He added that "during a war, a coastal state under attack may restrict navigation in its territorial waters for security purposes."

Sharp Criticism of the West

The Russian diplomat also compared Western countries to pirates.

"Unlike pirates who fly black flags with a skull and crossbones on their ships, Western countries try to hide their lawless actions by citing unilateral coercive measures. This is merely a fig leaf intended to conceal the fact that the (European Union) is engaged in outright robbery at sea,"

he said.

Context

Earlier, Russia and China vetoed a draft UN Security Council resolution aimed at ensuring freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz.

In addition, Nebenzya condemned Ukrainian strikes on Russian-linked tankers in the Mediterranean Sea and criticized Europe's support for attacks on Russian vessels in the Black Sea.
