Russia pardoned the 32-year-old American on humanitarian grounds after four years in prison. He is headed to a military hospital in Texas for treatment.

A former U.S. Marine who was held in Russia for more than four years was released several days after his family warned that he was close to death, UNN reports, citing Sky News.

U.S. officials said that Russian dictator Vladimir Putin approved a pardon for 32-year-old Robert Gilman on humanitarian grounds.

The White House and the State Department called on Moscow to release Gilman so that he could receive treatment in the United States.

According to Eric Lebson, chief strategy officer at Global Reach, a group working to secure the release of Americans detained abroad, the veteran is now heading to a military hospital in Texas, where he will undergo medical and psychological evaluation and treatment.
