Mohammed Deif was the commander of the military wing of Hamas and the second in command of the terrorist organization in the Gaza Strip. According to the IDF, it was Deif who initiated, planned and carried out the October 7 massacre, during which 1,200 people were killed in southern Israel and 251 hostages were abducted in the Gaza Strip.
As noted, other terrorists were also killed in the strike.
On Wednesday, July 31, one of the leaders of the Palestinian militant group Hamas, Ismail Haniyeh, was killed in an air strike in Iran. In response to Haniyeh's assassination, Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei ordered a direct strike against Israel.
UN Security Council (UNSC) countries condemned the assassination of Hamas political leader Ismail Haniyeh in Iran and called for intensified diplomatic efforts to prevent all-out war in the Middle East. Iranian Ambassador to the UN Amir Saeed Iraniani blamed the United States for Haniyeh's assassination.
