German Chancellor Friedrich Merz should lead negotiations on behalf of the European Union to end Russian aggression in Ukraine, heading a mission based on a mandate from the European Council and the European Commission. This was stated by Czech Prime Minister Andrej Babiš, UNN reports with reference to Ceske Noviny.

According to him, the war in Ukraine must be stopped, while "it is obvious that Russian President Vladimir Putin is the aggressor, and US President Donald Trump is focusing on the Middle East and resolving the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz."

Earlier, Finnish President Alexander Stubb stated that he would be ready to represent Europe at peace talks if asked.
Russian dictator Vladimir Putin spoke in favor of the candidacy of former German Chancellor Gerhard Schröder as a possible mediator in contacts between Russia and the European Union.
Also considered as possible negotiators with the RF from the EU were the President of the European Council António Costa, former Federal Chancellor of Germany Angela Merkel, Federal President of Germany Frank-Walter Steinmeier, and former President of the European Commission Jean-Claude Juncker.
