The accident occurred early Tuesday at a railway crossing approximately 1 kilometer from the Buggenhout station.
According to the Belgian newspaper Le Soir, the circumstances are still under investigation, but preliminary reports indicate that the railway crossing was closed at the time of the accident. Le Soir, citing a reliable source, also reports that several people died as a result of this accident. The exact number of victims is not yet known.
Belgian Interior Minister Bernard Quintin wrote in a post on X that he "learned with deep sadness of the tragic accident that occurred in Buggenhout." He did not provide further details.
Spokespeople for the Belgian police did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
Belgium, where an extensive railway network passes through towns and villages, has a history of accidents at railway crossings.
Five people died in such accidents in 2025, according to the railway infrastructure operator Infrabel on its website, which is the lowest number recorded since 2020.
