In Kyiv, a driver who struck and killed a serviceman at a checkpoint and injured his colleague was sentenced to 7 years in prison, the Kyiv City Prosecutor's Office reported on Saturday, UNN writes.
A guilty verdict has been announced for the driver who struck two National Guard servicemen at a checkpoint in the Sviatoshynskyi district. The Sviatoshynskyi District Court supported the prosecutor's position, finding the driver guilty of causing a fatal traffic accident (Part 2 of Article 286 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine) and sentencing the defendant to 7 years in prison with a 3-year ban on operating vehicles,
Substance of the case
The fatal accident occurred in July 2023. The driver, who was 23 years old at the time, was driving along Beresteiskyi Avenue during curfew at a speed of at least 134.52 km/h, which was more than double the maximum speed allowed on that section of the road. Approaching a checkpoint marked with "STOP - control" signs, as well as signs requiring drivers to reduce speed, the driver failed to do so in time.
As a result, he was unable to stop the vehicle and struck two servicemen who were on duty at the checkpoint. One of them died at the scene from his injuries, while the other sustained moderate bodily injuries.
Subsequently, while attempting to stop the car, the driver collided with two vehicles located near the checkpoint.
