A video posted on Instagram by travel blogger Lesly Ann Murphy shows how passengers on the ocean liner "Ocean Explorer" were caught in huge waves on their way through the Drake Passage between Antarctica and southern South America.

The video shows giant waves crashing against panoramic windows as passengers try to stay on their feet.

 - Murphy comments on the feeling of being on board the Quark Expeditions ship on the 26th.

Photos posted on social media show passengers struggling to keep their balance as the ship sways violently.

The New York Post also reports on the incident: the cruise ship was traveling through the Drake Passage, a 600-mile strait between Antarctica and the southern part of South America, returning from the frozen continent.

Quark Expeditions (a travel company that offers expeditions to the polar regions on board expedition ships and icebreakers - ed.) warned that the passage is famous for its "harsh climate and powerful waves" caused by the convergence of the Atlantic, Pacific and Antarctic Oceans.

Passengers of the cruise ship were "lucky" to be caught in the moment of the development of an oceanic phenomenon with the so-called "washing machine effect".

Despite the fright, the situation was completely safe, says travel blogger Leslie Ann Murphy.

"We were ordered to stay in our cabins," she said.

It should be added that the company responsible for the expedition stressed that the safety of passengers is guaranteed even in such intense conditions. However, it is also known that traveling through the Drake Passage is inherently unpredictable and difficult.

Let us remind you

The cruise ship "Crown Princess" with 3,100 passengers was caught in a severe storm near Milford Sound. As a result of the ship's tilt, 16 people were injured, but the liner continued its planned journey.
