A study of 67,000 species showed that up to 16% of plants will lose their habitats. This will cause a global restructuring of ecosystems by the end of the century.

Climate change is increasingly threatening plants worldwide and could lead to the extinction of some species by the end of the century. This is stated in a study published in the journal Science, Reuters reports, according to UNN.

Details

Scientists analyzed more than 67,000 species of vascular plants—nearly a fifth of all known plants on the planet. Researchers concluded that between 7% and 16% of species could lose more than 90% of their natural habitat due to warming, changing precipitation patterns, droughts, and fires.

Among the plants at risk are the rare Catalina ironwood in California, ancient moss species, and about a third of eucalyptus species in Australia. Scientists note that the problem lies not only in rising temperatures but also in the changing complex of conditions necessary for plant survival.

Scientists warn of a global restructuring of ecosystems

Researchers emphasize that even the ability of plants to migrate to new regions does not solve the problem, as suitable habitats are becoming increasingly scarce.

As a result, new ecosystems may form in which species have never previously coexisted.

Scientists also warn that the reduction of plant cover could exacerbate climate change, as plants play a key role in absorbing carbon dioxide, stabilizing soils, and supporting ecosystems.
