Based on the materials of the NABU pre-trial investigation, a SAPO prosecutor has filed an indictment in court against a People's Deputy of Ukraine. He was exposed for laundering over 9 million hryvnias obtained through criminal means
The investigation established that the MP promised officials of a private company to help with a permit for transporting mineral fertilizers across the Ukrainian border. In exchange, a significant amount of money was transferred to the account of a person close to the MP. However, it turned out that the MP provided no legal assistance and kept the money for himself.
Subsequently, he laundered the illegal capital by purchasing "BMW F95 X5M" and "Mercedes-AMG G63" vehicles with a total value of over 9 million hryvnias.
The money laundering consisted of a series of operations:
- transferring money allegedly for legal services to the accounts of a firm owned by a close relative of the MP;
- subsequently transferring part of these funds to another account;
- the use of these funds by a third party to purchase the vehicles.
After this, the MP began using the cars as if they had been purchased with income from business activities.
The MP's actions are classified under Part 2 of Art. 209 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine. The sanction of the article provides for punishment in the form of imprisonment for a term of five to eight years, with deprivation of the right to hold certain positions or engage in certain activities for a term of up to three years, and with confiscation of property.
