According to a Swedish prosecutor, a ship captain of Chinese nationality has been arrested on suspicion of using forged documents and violating seaworthiness legislation. This was reported by Reuters, according to UNN.
The captain, whose name has not been disclosed, will be interrogated on Monday, stated Senior Prosecutor Adrien Combier-Hogg.
Authorities believe the vessel may belong to the so-called "shadow fleet" — a hidden network of ships that Russia uses to bypass Western sanctions imposed in response to the war against Ukraine.
As European countries have stepped up measures against the shadow fleet, Sunday's arrest of the Jin Hui marks Sweden's fifth such operation this year.
Russia has not yet commented on the incident; however, it has previously condemned the detention of its vessels, calling it a hostile act.
It is currently unknown how the suspect responded to the vessel's detention and the charges.
The Coast Guard reported that the vessel, whose final destination is unknown and which was likely not carrying cargo, is on several sanctions lists, including those of the European Union and the United Kingdom.
As a reminder
Sweden detained the sanctioned vessel Jin Hui due to its links to the Russian Federation's shadow fleet. The ship was towed to port for an investigation.
