The ultimatum of the Russian Federal Antimonopoly Service to Apple may fit into the Kremlin's scheme to build a digital curtain. This is reported by the Center for Countering Disinformation of the National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine (CCD), informs UNN.
Details
It is noted that on July 15, the regulator's ultimatum deadline for the mandatory installation of Russian software on iOS expired. At the same time, failure to comply with the requirements threatens the American corporation with multi-billion dollar fines, and for users - with the prospect of a complete blocking of devices.
The Russian authorities perfectly understand that a direct ban on Apple gadgets will cause fierce resistance from the population, which values the usual digital comfort above propaganda. Therefore, the authorities are deliberately bringing the situation to the point where blocking Apple devices in Russia will become a "natural step"
The CCD points out that the logic here is simple: first, set unrealistic demands on the Western tech giant that violate the basic security architecture of iOS and sanctions, and then "milk" multi-billion dollar fines from the company for their non-fulfillment. When Apple refuses to compromise and pay fictitious penalties, the authorities with a "clear conscience" will block the devices.
"This would allow the Kremlin to present the blocking not as a digital dictatorship or tightening of censorship, but as a 'forced measure' in response to the disregard of the law by a foreign corporation. In this way, an 'alibi' is created for the domestic consumer," the CCD summarizes.
Recall
A massive failure in the operation of Google, Apple, Samsung and GitHub in Russia may indicate preparation for new blockages. The CCD considers this to be testing of equipment for traffic filtering.
