President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has said that Ukraine does not want to extend the gas  contract with Russia. Kyiv is currently  negotiating natural gas supplies to the European Union from Azerbaijan. He said this in an interview with Bloomberg on Wednesday, UNN reports.

Details

The agreement on the transit of Russian gas to the EU   expires at the end of 2024. According to the President, alternative options for using the pipeline with another gas supplier are being considered.

"We do not want to extend the gas contract with the Russian Federation. We don't want them to make money here," Zelensky said.

According to him, an agreement to replace Russian gas with Azerbaijani gas is "one of the proposals" being discussed.

"Now members of the Cabinet of Ministers are doing this," Zelensky said.

The publication notes that European gas prices declined after the President's remarks, extending daily losses below 33 euros per megawatt-hour.

Addendum

The current agreement between Ukraine's state-owned energy company Naftogaz and Russia's Gazprom was signed in 2019.  Earlier, Bloomberg reported that European officials are negotiating to keep gas flowing through the pipeline through Ukraine, one option could be for European companies to buy and pump gas from Azerbaijan into Russian pipelines.
