On World Energy Independence Day, various events are held around the world to promote the transition from fossil fuels to renewable energy sources such as wind, solar, hydroelectric, nuclear and geothermal energy.

Today, on July 10, various events are taking place in many countries around the world on the occasion of the World Energy Independence Day, UNN reports.

The goal of the event, which was launched in the United States in 2006, is to find ways to make a faster transition from traditional fossil fuels to alternative energy sources.

This transition is often hampered by a lack of understanding of these renewable energy sources and their cost-effectiveness.

However, more and more experts are inclined to believe that coal, gas, and oil should be finally replaced by wind, solar, hydroelectric, nuclear, and geothermal energy.

In recent years, today's environmental event has begun to take on an increasingly political color. Many countries are talking about completely abandoning Russian oil and gas, and thus depriving Russia of the opportunity to finance its military industry.

For Ukraine, which is suffering from Russian energy terror, today's event is a reminder of the need to build an efficient energy generation and distribution system based on alternative sources.

The date for the Energy Independence Day events was not chosen by chance - Nikola Tesla was born on July 10, 1856, so today is the day dedicated to this outstanding inventor, engineer and researcher of electric current.

After moving from Europe to the United States, Tesla actively collaborated with another prominent inventor, Thomas Edison. However, Edison did not support Tesla's ideas about alternating current, so they parted ways.

Tesla realized his theories and ideas in collaboration with George Westinghouse, in his energy company.

In 1895, the world's largest hydroelectric power plant was launched at Niagara Falls, equipped with generators developed by Tesla.

Westinghouse bought nearly 50 patents for various inventions from Tesla for $1,000.

Tesla, who did not have much money, died at the age of 86 in a hotel room in New York. In 1957, the urn with his ashes was moved to the inventor's museum in Belgrade.

The unit of magnetic induction in the SI system is named after Tesla.

Today, animal rights activists and environmentalists can join an event dedicated to the largest rodent known to science - Capybara Day.

The capybaras look like large guinea pigs. These animals live in South America. In some regions, they are bred for meat and fur.

Interestingly, capybaras live in captivity almost twice as long as in the wild.

Another event today is related to the animal kingdom - Don't Step on a Bee Day. Its goal is to draw public attention to the problem of bee extinction, the importance of these insects for many ecosystems, agriculture, etc.

Biologists have estimated that over the past 30 years, 25% of bee species have completely disappeared on our planet, and almost half of them are rare species.

Today, football fans can join the celebration of the birthday of the football whistle.

It is believed that it was on July 10, 1878, that a football referee used a whistle in the UK.

The referee of that game was a police officer. At some point, when the situation on the field was very tense, he used his official whistle to draw the attention of the players.

The football whistle has simplified communication between referees and players. Previously, referees had to draw attention to themselves only by using their voices or, for example, a bell. Initially, whistles were made of wood, later of metal, and then switched to plastic.

According to the church calendar, today is the day of remembrance of St. Anthony of the Caves.

Born in the Chernihiv region, Anthony decided from a young age to devote his life to serving the Lord and went to Athos, where he took monastic vows.

After a while he returned and became one of the founders of monastic life in Kievan Rus.

Anton, Heorhii, Danylo, and Stepan celebrate their name days on July 10.
