The Beginning of the Dormition Fast and the Feast of the Procession of the Precious and Life-Giving Cross of the Lord (First Savior/Makoveia)
According to the new (Revised Julian) calendar, the two-week Dormition Fast begins on August 14 and continues until the Feast of the Dormition of the Most Holy Theotokos. The First Savior (Makoveia) is also celebrated on this day.
In churches, honey, poppy seeds, and special bouquets called "makoviich yky," made of wildflowers and medicinal herbs (including poppy heads, mint, thyme, and wormwood), are traditionally blessed. Hence the holiday's popular name—Honey Savior.
For those who follow the old (Julian) calendar: August 14 marks the Feast of the Origin of the Precious and Life-Giving Cross (Makoveia), the commemoration of the Seven Maccabean Martyrs, and the memorial day of the Holy Martyr Yelona (Solomonia).
