Concluding the Wednesday meeting with pilgrims, the Pontiff "issued an appeal, commenting on the recent massive shelling of Ukraine, the victims of which were once again civilians," the publication writes.

"I am following with concern the war in Ukraine, which has significantly escalated in recent days. I want to express my closeness to all those who are suffering from the consequences of the recent shelling, which was also directed against the civilian population," the Pope said.

"War does not solve problems, it only deepens them. It does not create security, but only multiplies suffering and hatred. Where missiles and drones fall, hope is also destroyed, homes and places of prayer are demolished, and the lives of innocent people are lost," noted Pope Leo XIV.

The Pontiff added: "I entrust all nations wounded by war to the protection of the Virgin Mary, Queen of Peace."
