Verkhovna Rada supports exemption of servicemen from liability for first WMD and desertion

In the first reading, the Verkhovna Rada supported a draft law that provides for the exemption of military personnel from criminal liability for unauthorized abandonment and desertion if it happened for the first time. However, in order to return to service, it will be necessary to obtain a written consent from the commander of the military unit where the soldier served. This was reported by UNN with reference to MP Oleksiy Honcharenko and the card of the draft law No. 11322.

According to the draft law, persons who first committed criminal offenses under the articles "Unauthorized leaving of a unit" and "Desertion" during martial law may be released from criminal liability if they voluntarily declare to the investigator or prosecutor their intention to return to the military unit before the end of the pre-trial investigation. However, this will require a written consent from the commander of the military unit.

The Verkhovna Rada has adopted as a whole a draft law stipulating that during martial law, officers deprived of their military rank through disciplinary procedure shall be reinstated in their former military rank regardless of their regular position.
