Russia's decision did not come as a surprise, but rather represents the same irresponsible rhetoric the country has used since invading Ukraine, according to a National Security Council official who spoke on condition of anonymity.
The comments came after Russian dictator Vladimir Putin signed a decree authorizing Russia to use nuclear weapons in response to a conventional attack on its territory that threatens its sovereignty, including the use of drones. This follows the US decision to allow Ukraine to use long-range missiles provided by the US to strike Russian territory.
