The aircraft, traveling from the Bahamas, landed at Piarco International Airport in Port of Spain on Thursday, May 14, for refueling. It was then scheduled to continue its route to Libya via Cape Verde. This route raised suspicions among the local police.
According to the Airports Authority of Trinidad and Tobago, upon the aircraft's arrival, Immigration Division officers determined that explosives were being transported on board. At the same time, the cargo had not been declared in accordance with international aviation and security protocols.
