United States President Donald Trump has threatened that there is a possibility of increasing duties against China.
In the first message posted on his Truth Social platform, the head of state announced his intention to raise tariffs by another 50% - if China does not withdraw mirror restrictions in response to the measures announced by Trump on Friday. We are talking about a 34 percent surcharge on American goods, which Beijing promised to introduce in response to Washington's latest steps.
Later, at the White House, Trump confirmed his intention to take tougher measures. If his statement is implemented, the total fiscal burden on Chinese products in the US will reach 104% - 20% were already applied in the spring, 34% were added last week, and another 50% may be introduced in the near future.
Despite the potential global consequences of such a policy and analysts' concerns about another round of trade escalation, stock indicators in Asian countries showed positive dynamics on Tuesday. In particular, the main indicator of the Tokyo Stock Exchange Nikkei 225 played more than six percent after the previous collapse by almost eight.
Thus, despite signals of an aggravation of the economic confrontation between the US and China, the markets of the East still maintain restrained optimism.
