President-elect Donald Trump has asked the Supreme Court to suspend a potential ban on TikTok until his administration can find a "political solution" to the issue. Bloomberg writes about it, UNN reports.
Details
The publication reports that Trump urged the court to give him time after his inauguration on January 20 to find a political solution to the dispute.
Trump takes no position on the merits of this dispute. Instead, he respectfully requests that the Court consider postponing the Act's deadline for divestiture until January 19, 2025, while it considers the merits of this case
It is noted that such a suspension will allow Trump to "reach a political solution.
In his address, Trump also noted that he has "outstanding dealmaking skills, a voter mandate, and the political will to negotiate a solution that preserves the platform and addresses the government's national security concerns.
Trump's appeal comes after TikTok and the Biden administration filed written arguments with the court on Friday.
The Department of Justice, led by Biden appointees, has said that China's control of TikTok poses serious threats to national security. U.S. Solicitor General Elizabeth Prelogar noted that the platform collects sensitive data on tens of millions of Americans and can be a powerful tool for covert operations of influence by a foreign adversary.
In response, TikTok said that Congress had not considered alternatives other than a ban.
While Trump previously supported banning TikTok, he has recently become more supportive of the platform. He said this month that he has warm feelings toward TikTok because it helped bring young voters to his side during the November election.
Recall
The U.S. Court of Appeals refused to suspend TikTok's ban, which will take effect on January 19, 2025. ByteDance has to sell the app, otherwise it will be removed from the US app stores.
