What the holiday of Trinity Sunday means
Trinity Sunday is a holiday in honor of the Holy Trinity — God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit. In Christian doctrine, this is one of the key concepts explaining the unity of God in three persons.
Pentecost is also associated with the descent of the Holy Spirit upon the apostles. According to church teaching, it was after this event that the disciples of Jesus Christ received the power to preach Christianity in different languages. Therefore, Trinity Sunday is often called the birthday of the Christian Church.
For believers, this holiday symbolizes renewal, spiritual purification, the strengthening of faith, and the presence of God's grace. In folk tradition, Trinity Sunday is also associated with the beginning of summer, greenery, fertility, and the honoring of nature.
Trinity Sunday in biblical history: what you need to know about it
The basis of the holiday is an event described in the New Testament. On the 50th day after the Resurrection of Jesus Christ, the apostles gathered in Jerusalem. According to the biblical account, the Holy Spirit descended upon them, after which they began to speak in different languages and preach to the people.
This event became crucial for the spread of Christianity. The apostles, who were previously frightened after Christ's execution, received the strength to speak openly about their faith. This is why Pentecost is considered the beginning of the active preaching of Christian doctrine.
In the Christian tradition, the holiday was established in the first centuries of the Church's existence. Over time, it acquired not only religious but also folk significance. In Ukrainian culture, Trinity Sunday combined religious meaning with ancient customs of honoring greenery, water, earth, and ancestors.
Ukrainian traditions on Trinity Sunday: how our ancestors honored the holiday
In Ukraine, Trinity Sunday has long been called the Green Holidays. The main tradition of this period is decorating the home, yard, and churches with green branches, herbs, and flowers.
Most often, branches of maple, linden, and birch are used, as well as mint, lovage, thyme, wormwood, and other fragrant herbs. Greenery is spread on the floor and used to decorate icons, doors, gates, and windows. It is believed that such plants protect the home and symbolize prosperity and life.
On Trinity Sunday, believers go to church for a festive service. Churches are also filled with greenery on this day. After the service, people often take blessed herbs home.
In folk tradition, Trinity Sunday was also a time for family gatherings. People cleaned their homes, prepared festive dishes, and visited relatives. In villages, the Green Holidays were accompanied by rituals involving youth, songs, weaving wreaths, and decorating yards.
A special place was held by the commemoration of the deceased. Before Trinity Sunday or during the Green Holidays, people visited cemeteries, cleaned graves, brought flowers, and prayed for their relatives.

At the same time, it is important to distinguish between church tradition and folk beliefs. For the church, the main significance of Trinity Sunday lies in prayer, participation in the liturgy, and the spiritual meaning of the holiday.
