The trip sparked a negative reaction from the Prime Minister of Greenland, as it followed repeated statements by President Donald Trump that the United States should own and control the island's territory.

Trump was asked to explain why officials are going and what the desired outcome is at his cabinet meeting on Monday.
"Yes, well, not a provocation. This is friendliness, not provocation," Trump said, saying officials were invited to the event.
"I think Greenland will become something that may be in our future," he added.
