Rubio called his tracksuit simply comfortable clothing without any subtext. He denied copying Maduro and stated that he had owned such clothes before.

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated that there is "no context" behind the tracksuit in which he was photographed during a flight to China, amid its stylistic similarity to the suit worn by ousted Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro when he was captured by U.S. forces, UNN reports, citing NBC News.

Details

"There is no context. It's a nice suit. I like it. It's comfortable," Rubio said today in an interview with NBC Nightly News in Beijing.

If anything, "he copied me because I already had one," said Rubio, who appeared in the suit in a photograph posted online by White House Communications Director Steven Cheung.

"I don't know when he bought his. I didn't even know he had it," he said.

Ultimately, according to Rubio, "it's comfortable. I don't know. There was no meaning behind it. I didn't even know he was taking a picture."

Recall

Rubio's presence aboard the presidential plane during the trip to China quickly attracted attention online: the White House released a photo of him relaxing in a Nike tracksuit similar to the one worn by ousted Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro when U.S. forces captured him in January.
