The State Bureau of Investigation reported that it is investigating the crash of a MiG-29 fighter jet during a combat mission in Odesa region, UNN writes.
The SBI employees opened criminal proceedings over the crash of a MiG-29 fighter jet of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, which occurred on the evening of August 10, 2026, in the Berezivskyi district of Odesa region
"According to preliminary information, the aircraft was carrying out a combat mission to destroy enemy drones. However, during the active phase of the operation, an emergency situation occurred, causing the aircraft to catch fire and the pilot to lose control, but he managed to eject. His life is not in danger," the bureau stated.
As noted, immediately after the fighter jet crashed, an SBI investigative team went to the scene and worked there throughout the night. "The bureau's employees inspected the area, seized and are documenting the aircraft wreckage, collecting the necessary materials, and questioning witnesses and servicemen," the statement said.
The search for the flight recorder—the so-called "black box"—is currently underway. Its data will be important for establishing the circumstances of the final minutes of the flight. After obtaining and analyzing this information, investigators will be able to determine and announce preliminary versions of the causes of the aviation incident. The investigation must also verify compliance with the rules for preparing for the flight, conducting it, and operating the aircraft
The information was entered into the Unified Register of Pretrial Investigations under Part 2 of Article 416 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine—violation of flight rules or preparation for them, as well as aircraft operation rules, which resulted in a crash.
The pretrial investigation is ongoing.
