"The SBU and the National Police detained a Russian agent who committed a terrorist attack in the center of Kyiv on November 17 this year on the order of enemy special services," the special service said.
On that day, a police unit responded to a call about domestic violence in an apartment building in the Pechersk district of the capital.
"When law enforcement officers attempted to enter the apartment, a so-called "tripwire" with an F-1 grenade went off at the entrance to the premises. As it turned out, no one lived in the apartment, and the "call" by a woman's voice to the 102 line was a fake to lure the police into a trap and kill them," the SBU said.
"According to the SBU, this terrorist attack was planned by Russian special services. To carry it out, they remotely engaged a 43-year-old resident of Kyiv region, who had already served 6 sentences for robbery, theft and prison break," the SBU said.
Before installing the tripwire, the agent reportedly performed a "test" task: he set fire to a relay cabinet of Ukrzaliznytsia on the outskirts of the capital and sent the relevant videos to the curator. "After that, the recidivist received step-by-step instructions for committing a terrorist attack against Ukrainian law enforcement officers," the SBU said.
"The attacker rented an apartment in the center of Kyiv, installed a tripwire with a live grenade, as well as video cameras that were supposed to record the explosion in real time. As a result of professional police actions, no one was injured in the explosion. Shortly afterward, law enforcement officers detained the suspect "in hot pursuit," the special service said .
The suspect was served a notice of suspicion under Part 2 Article 258 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine (terrorist act). The man is in custody. He faces up to 12 years in prison with confiscation of property.
