A Russian judge sentenced a soldier of the 17th Brigade to 15 years in prison for participating in the war. The Prosecutor General's Office served him with a notice of suspicion for violating the laws and customs of war.

A Russian judge has been served a notice of suspicion for sentencing a Ukrainian prisoner of war. As reported by the Prosecutor General's Office, the suspect ignored the requirements of international humanitarian law, UNN reports.

According to the investigation, a judge of the 2nd Western District Military Court of the Russian Federation passed an illegal sentence against a Ukrainian prisoner of war — a soldier of the 17th Separate Heavy Mechanized Kryvyi Rih Brigade named after Kostyantyn Pestushko.

The Ukrainian serviceman was taken prisoner in October 2024. Subsequently, the Russian court sentenced the Ukrainian defender to 15 years of imprisonment, effectively for participating in an international armed conflict on the side of Ukraine 

— the report states.

The suspect ignored the requirements of international humanitarian law, specifically the provisions of the Geneva Convention relative to the Treatment of Prisoners of War.

The Russian judge was notified of suspicion for violating the laws and customs of war (Part 1 of Article 438 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine).
