On August 20, the Russian Ministry of Defense made a statement that the Russian military had allegedly captured the village of New York in the Donetsk region of Ukraine. The General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine did not comment on the information, but in a summary they noted that the enemy attacked near New York today, UNN reports.

The occupiers said they had allegedly "liberated" one of the largest settlements in the Toretsk agglomeration and "the strategically important logistics hub of Novhorodske.
It should be noted that Novhorodskoye is the old name of the village of New York.

The General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine did not comment on the information provided by the Russian Defense Ministry. However, in the report, as of 16:00, it was noted that the enemy was attacking near the settlements of New York, Nelipivka, Toretsk and Zalizne.
"In the Toretsk sector, the number of enemy attacks is currently 14. Today, the enemy is attacking near the towns of New York, Nelipivka, Toretsk and Zalizne. Our defenders are giving the enemy a worthy rebuff, 13 combat engagements have already been completed and the battle is ongoing. The aggressor's aviation struck Druzhba with unguided aerial missiles, Toretsk and Nelipivka with eleven anti-aircraft missiles," the report says.

On August 19, MP Mariana Bezuhla said on Radio Liberty that New York in Donetsk region is no longer under the control of Ukraine.
On August 18, Russian military bloggers claimed that Russian troops controlled most of New York (south of Toretsk) and may have captured the town. They also claimed that Russian troops had advanced north of Zhuravka. However the US-based Institute for the Study of War (ISW), which has been paying attention to these claims, has not observed visual evidence of any of these claims.
