Rada expands access to Free Legal Aid: who will get new rights

The Verkhovna Rada has adopted a law on expanding the circle of persons entitled to free secondary legal assistance.

The Verkhovna Rada has adopted a government bill that expands the range of persons entitled to free secondary legal assistance. In particular, victims of racism, sexism and other violations will be able to get it. About it writes UNN with reference to the people's deputy Yaroslav Zheleznyak and the card of the Bill No. 11456.

"No. 11456-expansion of the list of persons entitled to free legal assistance. As a basis (242)," Zheleznyak said.

According to the draft law, the right to free secondary legal assistance can be granted to those who have suffered criminal offenses based on hatred on the grounds of race, skin color, political, religious and other beliefs, gender, disability, ethnic and social origin, property status, place of residence, and language.

The law should come into force one year after the lifting of martial law in Ukraine.

Free secondary legal aid is assistance with applying to the court:

  • representation of a person's interests in courts, other state bodies, local self-government bodies, before other persons;
  • preparation of documents for applying to the court (procedural).

Now the right to free legal assistance has:

  • adults, if their income does not exceed two times the subsistence minimum;
  • children;
  • IDP;
  • people with disabilities who receive a low pension or social assistance;
  • war veterans;
  • family members of dead (deceased) war veterans, family members of dead (deceased) defenders and defenders of Ukraine;
  • victims of domestic violence;
  • victims of ill-treatment, torture or sexual violence during military operations;
  • people who do not have identity documents and confirm Ukrainian citizenship, etc.
