The meeting took place in Saint Petersburg against the backdrop of the escalating situation in the Middle East following strikes by the US and Israel, which Moscow had previously condemned.

Putin emphasized support for Iran and expressed his appreciation for the actions of its population.

"We see how courageously and heroically the Iranian people are fighting for their independence and sovereignty,"

he stated.

He also assured of Russia's readiness to facilitate a settlement of the situation.

"For our part, we will do everything that serves your interests and the interests of all peoples of the region to ensure that peace is achieved as quickly as possible,"

Putin said.

Russia's Role

Moscow had previously offered to act as a mediator between Iran and the US, and also initiated the idea of storing Iranian enriched uranium as a way to reduce tensions; however, Washington rejected this proposal.

According to sources, work to find a compromise between the US and Iran continues, despite the complications in the negotiation process.
